How An Abington Woman Earned a Quick Visa and Made it to Mexico

Abington journalist Wendy Rosenfield is making Mexico her new home. Here’s how she got her visa with ease.

Back in 2016, after Donald Trump’s election, plenty of people swore they’d leave the country, writes Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.

Few, if any, actually did. Fast forward to today, and the same conversations are happening—except this time, Abington journalist Wendy Rosenfield is following through.

Rosenfield recently secured a temporary residency visa for Mexico, taking the first step toward making the move permanent. The process, she found, was surprisingly simple.

After the 2024 election results, Rosenfield—married to a busy attorney—decided to seriously consider her options. She had similar thoughts in 2016, but this time, the sense of urgency felt stronger.

Wanting to stay in the Western Hemisphere, she ruled out Iceland (too hard to get residency) and South America (too far). Instead, she spent January in Guanajuato, Mexico, and fell in love with it.

A quick trip to the Mexican consulate in Philly, a $54 fee, and proof of financial stability later, she had her visa. Next, she’ll finalize paperwork in Mexico, allowing her to stay for a year, with options to extend.

And her husband? At first, he said “absolutely not”—but then he visited. Now, he’s warming up to the idea.
