St. Joe’s Student Remembers NFL Star Saquon Barkley as Her Babysitter
Maisey Hartman, a St. Joseph’s University student, knows Saquon Barkley not just as an NFL star with two Pro Bowl appearances, but as her former babysitter, writes Alex Coffey for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Hartman grew up in Whitehall, two miles from Coplay, where Barkley lived. She met the NFL star, who joined Philadelphia Eagles this year, through her father, Bob Hartman, the longtime athletic director at Whitehall High School, Barkley’s alma mater.
Bob Hartman quickly formed a close bond with Barkley during his time at the school and knew he could trust him. So, in 2014, when his family needed a backup babysitter, he turned to the teenager who would one day leave NFL defenders in his wake.
Barkley started to fill in whenever the Hartmans’ regular babysitter was unavailable, watching over Hartman and her older brother, Zack, around six times.
“He was so nice and funny,” said Hartman. “He made sure I didn’t feel left out. He was really chill. He didn’t really say, ‘Make sure your teeth are brushed and you’re in bed at this specific time.’ He just made sure we were doing the right things.”
