Bradley Cooper Shares What He Learned From Rejection

Bradley Cooper has seen incredible success in Hollywood, both on camera and directing, but recalls a memorable time he was rejected.

Abington native Bradley Cooper, known for Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, shared a poignant story about a rejection early in his career that left a lasting impression, writes Emily Ruuskanen for Far Out Magazine.

Cooper has had an incredibly successful career He starred in movies like the Hangover, Wedding Crashers, American Sniper and A Star is Born before transitioning to directing. Despite his success, one rejection stood out: failing to land a role in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies.

“I put myself on tape for Public Enemies and didn’t get it,” Cooper recalled. “(But) Michael Mann sent me a letter saying, ‘Thank you for auditioning, and I see something in you.’ I kept that on my bookshelf for so many years. And you never know the impact you have. I learned from that.” Inspired, Cooper now writes to every actor who auditions for his projects.

This compassionate gesture, rare in Hollywood, softened the blow of losing out to Johnny Depp, who starred in Public Enemies as bank robber John Dillinger. Cooper’s story highlights the cold and clinical nature of Hollywood’s casting practices, which often neglect the emotional vulnerability of creatives.

Michael Mann’s approach serves as a reminder that small acts of kindness can leave lasting effects.
