Montgomery County adds four new Code Blue Shelters to give the homeless a refuge in the upcoming winter season.

Montgomery County is increasing efforts to support residents experiencing homelessness this winter, adding four new “Code Blue” shelters, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.

Along with existing facilities, these will provide 186 beds across Lansdale, Norristown, Pennsburg, Plymouth Meeting, and Pottstown.

“This proposed budget includes $2 million in operating expenses to increase the number of critical shelter services during the winter season,” said Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairwoman Jamila Winder.

The county issues Code Blue alerts when temperatures or wind chills drop below 32°F. The latest alert runs from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday.

Designated code blue shelters include Haws Avenue United Methodist Church and Norristown Hospitality Center for single adults, Pottstown Beacon of Hope for single men and women, The Open Link in Pennsburg for single men, and Salvation Army facilities in Norristown and Pottstown for families and single women. A $15 per person reimbursement will help shelters provide meals, accommodations, and essential support.

Homelessness impacts over 1,000 single adults annually in Montgomery County. There were 435 unsheltered or in temporary housing during last January’s Point-in-Time Count. Rising rents and living costs contribute to the crisis, visible in Norristown and Pottstown encampments.
