Lessons in Leadership from Governor Josh Shapiro
Gov. Josh Shapiro serves as an example of effective political leadership, offering valuable lessons for leaders everywhere, writes Allan Domb for the Philadelphia Magazine.
Shapiro has a unique mix of skills. The governor combines the ability to understand specific issues – a trait common among legislators – with the vision and action-oriented approach typical of executive leaders like mayors and governors. He works to understand what his constituents want and is capable of implementing real solutions.
He attempts to avoid situations where his solutions will help one group but harm another. Instead, he focuses on listening to people and accepting good ideas from wherever they come from.
He is also good at getting stuff done. After a portion of I-95 collapsed following a truck fire last year, the initial worry was that one of America’s most traveled highways would be closed for months. Instead, Shapiro pushed for creative solutions that would help fix the highway quickly. His office helped cut the red tape to help with getting it done. As a result, I-95 was reopened within a matter of days.
With that, he demonstrated that the government can move expediently.
