New Project Will Expand Schuylkill River Trail Further Into South Philadelphia
The Schuylkill River Development Corporation is currently working on a project that would expand the Schuylkill River Trail further into South Philadelphia, according to a staff report from The Bharat Express News.
The main element of this ambitious plan is a pedestrian bridge over the river that would link South Philadelphia to Grays Ferry.
The group responsible for developing and maintaining the trail has been designing this project for over ten years and is expecting to have it wrapped up in June 2025.
“We’ve been waiting for 40 years for this to happen,” said Joseph Syrnick, president of the SRDC. “We thought it might happen, but now we see something.”
Currently, the trail stops at Christian Street, but the extended version would cross the new cable-stayed bridge and continue on Grays Ferry Crescent over the river. The Crescent was once a DuPont site that has now been transformed into a riverside walkway and park between Grays Ferry Avenue and 34th Street.
“Making the connection means that people in South and Southwest Philly are now connected to Center City, which is very important because that’s where the theaters are, that’s where the schools are and, most importantly, that’s where the jobs are,” said Syrnick.
