Pottsgrove School District has earned notable recognition for its commitment to music education, writes Evan Brandt for the Pottstown Mercury.
The Pottsgrove School District is named one of the Best Communities for Music Education for the fifth consecutive year. The recognition is awarded by the National Association of Music Merchants. The award is determined by impartial judges at the University of Kansas, who evaluate a rigorous 36-page application that varies each year.
Tom Kelly of Zeswitz Music spent over 30 years supporting public school music programs. He celebrated this achievement at the recent Pottsgrove School Board meeting.
Kelly emphasized the importance of this accolade, noting that out of thousands of school districts nationwide, only about 700 are honored annually. “It’s a real testament to the work your staff is doing here,” he said, commending the dedication of Pottsgrove’s music directors over the years.
The district’s musical significance continues to grow. The school board has unanimously approved hosting the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s District 11 Choir Festival at Pottsgrove Middle School. The festival will take place in early February. This event will bring together approximately 150 students from 60 different school districts, showcasing the cooperative spirit of music education. Choir director Amy McMahon recalled her own participation in similar festivals as a student, describing it as one of the best experiences of her life.
Superintendent David Finnerty shared his enthusiasm for the event. He noted that audio improvements planned for the middle school will be completed in time. This should enhance the experience for participants and attendees alike. “This is a great showcase for us,” he stated, highlighting Pottsgrove’s commitment to its music program.
