Main Line Fertility: Busiest and Highest Revenue-Producing Ambulatory Surgery Center in the Region
Main Line Fertility was 2023’s top revenue-generating and busiest ambulatory surgery center in the Philadelphia region, reports John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
This is according to a Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council report. The Bryn Mawr-based reproductive endocrinology group earned $31.7 million and handled 16,104 patient visits.
The report includes data from 292 Pennsylvania outpatient surgery centers, including 104 in the Philadelphia region. Statewide, net patient revenue increased 14.1 percent to $1.9 billion in fiscal 2023, up from $1.67 billion the previous year.
Philadelphia’s 25 surgery centers averaged $5.8 million in revenue and 3,049 patient visits, while the 79 suburban centers averaged $7.1 million in revenue and 3,884 visits. The five largest operating profits were reported by suburban centers, with Bucks County Surgical Suites leading at $7.6 million. CHOP Bucks County surgery center follows at $7.3 million and Main Line Fertility at $5.8 million.
John Harris is the managing director at healthcare consulting firm Veralon. He noted that ambulatory surgery centers typically have lower costs, which helps maintain profitability.
“They’re not as much overhead as you find in a hospital, so it’s not surprising most are profitable,” he said.
Suburban centers generally perform better financially due to higher patient volume and a more favorable payer mix, with more patients covered by commercial insurance.
