Abington native Gov. Josh Shapiro raised $9 million this year from businesspeople, venture capitalists, and Hollywood stars, among others.

Campaign coffers of Gov. Josh Shapiro are $9 million heavier so far this year, writes Gillian McGoldrick for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Since the start of the year, the Upper Dublin native has received contributions from wealthy businesspeople, venture capitalists, and Hollywood stars, among others.

The amount is considerable for the Democratic first-term governor, who is not currently running for reelection or pursuing a higher office. These funds will enable him to build a substantial financial reserve before his next campaign.

Shapiro’s top donor was a California physician Jennifer Duda, who so far donated $2 million to his campaign this year. She previously backed Shapiro when he ran for governor. Shapiro received $500,000 each from Democratic billionaire George Soros and former video game company executive John Riccitiello, as well as $200,000 total from Ariel Emanuel, who heads Endeavor, the company that owns WWE and UFC.

Hollywood couple Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw contributed $100,000, while former Meta CEO Sheryl Sandberg and whistleblower Edward Snowden donated $25,000 each.

Shapiro’s campaign finance report is the first he has released since being considered as a potential running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris.
