Council Rock North Soccer Star Mia Cairone Finds Home at Nebraska After Penn State Withdraws
After Penn State took away her verbal scholarship amid the House v. NCAA settlement, Council Rock North standout Mia Cairone has found her future soccer home at Nebraska, writes Isabella DiAmore for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Cairone had been committed to Penn State for a year when she first heard about colleges having to set roster limits due to the lawsuit. She immediately suspected this decision would impact her offer.
Soon, she found out she was right. She received a call from Nittany Lions coach Erica Dambach, who notified her they could not honor her verbal commitment.
“I don’t even know how to describe what I was feeling,” said Cairone. “I think it was honestly the worst moment of my life.”
The athlete immediately got on her computer to email coaches. She was looking at programs that still needed players, but she also decided to focus on Big Ten schools.
“Part of it was a little revenge factor,” she said. “But the other part of it was that I love Big Ten soccer. They definitely go all out.”
In September, Cairone committed to Nebraska.
