Philadelphia’s Bicycle Transit Systems Acquires Wisconsin-based Trek’s BCycle

Bicycle Transit Systems is acquiring BCycle, making the former the largest docked bike share provider in the United States, based on the number of communities served.

Bicycle Transit Systems, which operates Philadelphia’s Indego bike share system, recently agreed to acquire Trek’s BCycle business, writes David Schuyler for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Through it, Bicycle Transit Systems will acquires all of BCycle’s contracts, software, hardware and future product development.

BCycle is a Wisconsin-based bike sharing system operator and vendor of e-bikes and software to other bike share operators. As a result of the acquisition, Bicycle Transit Systems will add BCycle-owned bike share systems in 10 U.S. cities.

Furthermore, Bicycle Transit Systems will become the largest docked bike share provider in the United States, based on the number of communities served in total.

“Synergies from the acquisition will allow us to grow and invest in product and technology innovation to more affordably and efficiently meet cities’ unique local needs,” Bicycle Transit Systems’ CEO Kristin Gavin-Wisniewski said in a statement posted to the company’s website. “With greater flexibility and oversight of product development, we can design real-time solutions to pressing equity, safety, and climate challenges.”

John Burke, president of Trek, BCycle’s parent company, expressed anticipating for the impending acquisition.

“We’re excited for Bicycle Transit Systems to take this mission even further as they continue to grow and make meaningful change for the benefit of our planet and future,” he said.
