Phoenixville Becomes a Recently Designated ‘Bird Town’
Phoenixville has become an official “Bird Town,” writes Justin Heinze for Patch.
The Bird Town program is an idea that came out of the National Audubon Society and recognizes municipalities for their commitment to conservation and avian stewardship.
Besides Phoenixville, there are 68 other municipalities in Pennsylvania that are gaining Bird Town status.
“Birds are natural indicators of ecological health,” said Heidi Shiver, the manager of Bird Town Pennsylvania. “Small steps in a backyard can increase the diversity of birds and at the same time create a healthier living environment for people and pets.”
Bird Town and the Audubon Society will help Phoenixville promote ecological diversity in the borough, as well as the wildlife resources available. Phoenixville will also provide environmental outreach and education to property owners, so they know how best to support these special living beings.
A positive bird ecosystem has a domino effect across the local environment. Bird diversity allows native plants to grow and flourish. Birds are a natural predator of disease spreading animals, such as mosquitos and ticks.
