Starting September 13, Pennsylvania will have longer happy hours under new state rules that will allow drinking establishments to increase their discounting from 14 to 24 hours per week, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The new rule and several others were overwhelmingly supported in the legislature and are an indicator of the loosening of the state’s liquor laws. The changes were backed by industry groups as they are likely to benefit both customers and owners.

“It’s an incentive for people to come in and feel like they’re getting more of a deal,” said Justin Coleman, owner of Bake’n Bacon in South Philadelphia.

The state is now allowing bars to also sell two discounted combination meals a day, like a burger and beer and a glass of wine with a steak. Bars can also include two drinks in a ticket price to create a “self-sponsored event,” such as a New Year’s Eve party.

It is still uncertain how many bar owners will use this change to increase their happy hours, as many seemed satisfied with offering specials for ten hours a week in a traditional two-hour pre-dinner slot on weekdays.
