After losing his daughter to leukemia six years ago, Rich Massi of Pottstown started the Fight On Makenna Foundation to help children and families dealing with pediatric cancer, writes Racquel Williams for KYW Newsradio.

“Our mission is pretty simple,” said Massi. “We decided to really focus on improving the quality of life for the kids and the families that are going through pediatric cancer.”

Massi’s daughter, Makenna, who was 14 when she died, spent 150 nights at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia while undergoing grueling treatment. As a foodie and somebody who loved sports, Makenna had difficulty with hospital food and little access to exercise equipment during that time.

Her experience inspired the family to work on providing more nutritious meal options as well as accessible exercise equipment to children fighting cancer at CHOP. To help cover the costs, the foundation hosts an annual fundraising event, Bite For The Fight.

This year, the fundraiser will be on September 14, at Greater Philadelphia Expo Center & Fairgrounds in Oaks.

“We have four celebrity chefs that are going to be attending, three of which are going to be doing culinary demos,” said Massi.
