There are several Philadelphia area suburbs where you can live with a low-car diet without much trouble, and one particular Montgomery County town fits the mold, writes Sandy Smith for Philadelphia Magazine.
That particular town is Pottstown, named after James Potts, who established an iron forge and rolling mill in upper Montgomery County in the early 1700s.
The neighborhood has a modest but delicious dining scene.
A former retail store is now home to the Steel River Playhouse professional theater.
Also, the Schuylkill River is lined with parkland as it flows through town. Pottstown is also home to the prestigious Hill School.
Kids can enjoy the antique Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel, the second-oldest wooden carousel still operating in the country.
While only one SEPTA transit route runs into Pottstown, it has its own municipal bus system, Pottstown Area Rapid Transit (PART). Its five routes provide service throughout the borough, plus neighboring Pottsgrove Township, Gibbstown, and Boyertown.
Pottstown, as a whole, has a modest 60 Walk Score, whereas down residential neighborhoods score 80.
