Did you know there are more than 411 miles of trails in the Greater Philadelphia region? That’s right, the Circuit Trails is an expansive network of multi-use trails that weave through cities, neighborhoods, and rural parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The trails serve as connectors to outdoor spaces for recreation, relaxation, and access to incredible destinations, in addition to being a mode of transportation for commuting and traveling.

This summer, spend some time outside exploring the Circuit Trails network. Find shady routes, waterfront walkways, and adventure-filled paths close to home or try out a trail outside your town.

Bucks County | D&L Trail

The D&L Trail runs for more than 140 miles through Eastern Pennsylvania, from just north of Philadelphia to Mountain Top in the Poconos Region. It follows historical canal and railroad routes at the core of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. In Pennsylvania, the D&L Trail connects with a portion of the 202 Trail in New Hope, the Newtown-Scudder Falls Trail in Yardley and the Bristol Spurline Trail in Bristol. The D&L also has multiple bridges that connect to the D&R Canal Towpath in New Jersey, which runs parallel to the D&L across the Delaware River for many miles.

Chester County | Chester Valley Trail

The paved Chester Valley Trail rolls for just under 19 miles between Exton and King of Prussia, encouraging a variety of users. It offers good shade coverage, fix-it bike stations, and a connection to the Schuylkill River Trail. Just off the trail, you can enjoy local eateries and shops.

Delaware County | Darby Creek Trail

At present there are three separate segments of the Darby Creek Trail, each about one mile long, which aren’t connected. The center segment, which opened in 2013 is currently the heart of the Darby Creek Trail network, travels from Merry Place in Glendale Park and provides a short, tranquil route.

Montgomery County | Cynwyd Heritage Trail

This popular two-mile route runs northeast from SEPTA’s Cynwyd Station, passes Bala Cynwyd Park and West Laurel Hill Cemetery, before ending at Belmont Avenue at Rock Hill Road. Clear quarter-mile markers and side-by-side gravel and asphalt paths make the Cynwyd Heritage Trail ideal for both runners and cyclists. Indego bikes are available to rent on the Manayunk side of the bridge to try out the trail by bike.

Philadelphia County | John Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum

John Heinz Refuge is America’s first urban refuge. Dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Tinicum Marsh and promoting environmental education, the site contains the largest remaining freshwater tidal wetland in Pennsylvania. Visitors can access more than 10 miles of trails that loop through the property and enjoy diverse wildlife including more than 300 species of birds.
