Upper Merion High School Alum Helped U.S. Women Earn First Rugby Sevens Olympics Medal

Ariana Ramsey, an Upper Merion High School graduate, helped the United States women's team win the bronze, its first Olympics rugby sevens medal ever.

Ariana Ramsey, an Upper Merion High School graduate, helped the United States women’s team win its first Olympics rugby sevens medal, writes Mike Sielski for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

During the bronze-medal game against heavily favored Australia, Ramsey set up Alex Sedrick’s stunning run-and-try play that got 65,000 people in the stands shouting and screaming in wonder and disbelief.

“There were four girls on her, and I was right behind her, trying to support her in case she got tackled,” said Ramsey. “Five meters from the try zone, I was like, ‘OK, I can slow down now.’”

Sedrick’s play secured the final score of 14-12 for the U.S. and the first Olympic medal in the program’s history.

“It’s kind of unreal,” said Ramsey. “Coming from Upper Merion to the Olympics, I feel like I helped put us on the map. I put King of Prussia on the map — Philadelphia in general. I feel like I’m making history. I feel like I’m making a huge impact and inspiring a lot of people. That’s my goal.”

Ramsey also recently contacted her former school and offered to host a rugby camp.
