Gov. Josh Shapiro campaigns with Vice President Kamala Harris at Reading Terminal Market last month. Shapiro is a top candidate to be Harris's Vice Presidential running mate for 2024.

All the talk this week is about PA Governor Josh Shapiro being one of the top candidates being considered to be Kamala Harris’s Vice Presidential running mate.

Many who have followed the Abington native’s political career are not surprised, write Julia Terruso, Jeremy Roebuck, Gillian McGoldrick, and Andrew Seidman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Shapiro caught the attention when he was elected to the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners in 2011.

“Watch, he’s going to be President someday,” said Marcel Groen, who was the chair of Montco’s Democratic Party at the time.

Gov. Shapiro’s track record proves favorable to his constituents across party lines. In 2016 and 2020, he received more votes in his elections than the Presidential candidates.

“I’ve never seen a person who was so destined to be who he was,” said former Abington commissioner Mike O’Connor.

Yet, not all are encouraged by the trajectory of Shapiro’s career and potential VP nod. Detractors point to some of Shapiro’s campaign tactics as signs of his opportunistic nature.

Still, Shapiro’s ability to cross party lines and his substantial popularity in swing state Pennsylvania make him an ideal candidate for Harris’ running mate.

For many who have known him since his Montgomery County roots, it’s only a matter of time.
