Vote on the Winning Potato Chip Flavor of This Year’s Herr’s Flavored By Philly Competition
Nottingham-based Herr’s has come out with a new trio of Philly-inspired chip flavors for the public to vote on, writes Nick Kariuki for Billy Penn at WHYY.
The public was asked to suggest potato chip flavors based on their favorite restaurant dish for a chance to win $5,000, a year’s supply of chips, and $10,000 for the spots themselves.
The three finalists are: Special Hot Stromboli, Potato Pierogi, and Cheese Ravioli and Marinara.
The Special Hot Stromboli strives to recreate the “savory, cheesy, and mild heat flavor” of the popular sandwich. Flavors of banana peppers, pizza dough, and oregano are noted and said to be accurate.
“The perfect blend of chip and sandwich,” one taster wrote.
Some criticisms were that the chip was “bland” and “underwhelming.”
Potato Pierogi seek to create the “sweet, creamy, and tangy flavors” of homemade Polish dumplings. Feedback said the chip was too similar to sour cream and onion. Another gripe was that it didn’t taste enough like an actual pierogi.
“It’s from the sour cream and onion factory, they just changed the label,” one taster said.
Cheese Ravioli and Mariana aims to recreate the “robust cheese ravioli and bright marinara sauce” of the classic Italian dish. Feedback shows the flavor is spot-on.
“I can definitely eat this without dip,” said one taster.
Voting ends Aug. 9.
