Retired Teacher Volunteers at Upper Merion Township Library As ‘English as a Second Language’ Class Instructor

Jean Olexy retired as a teacher years ago, but has since began teaching ESL classes at Upper Merion Township Library.

Jean Olexy is an Upper Merion Township woman who volunteers her time to teach “English as a Second Language” courses, reports Nick Iadonisi for 6abc.

After retiring from her regular teaching job, she began volunteering as an ESL instructor over 12 years ago.

“I love learning and I love people,” said Olexy. “And I feel that I help them and I am very grateful for that.”

People from all over the world, with various different backgrounds, are able to sharpen their English speaking skills with Olexy’s help.

As a result, they can improve not only their professional capabilities when it comes to communication, but can also enhance their belonging in the everyday community.

“At the Upper Merion Township Library, we benefit greatly from volunteers like Jean Olexy, who come in to help us with programs, especially in areas that we may not have an expertise in,” said Laura Arnhold, Upper Merion Township Library Director. “Being able to offer something to people coming to this country that may not speak English extremely well or just want to brush up on their skills is really something valuable that we can offer.”

Olexy often tells her students that she learns as much from them as they learn from her.
