African American Museum in Philadelphia to Host Event Celebrating History of Black Music in Philly

By

The African American Museum in Philadelphia is hosting an event celebrating the rich history of “The Philadelphia Sound” on Thursday, August 1.

The official name of the event is “AAMPlifying Black Philly Music: Unveiling the Philadelphia Sound.”

The interactive program will explore Philadelphia music history spanning from the 1800s to the present-day with a focus on jazz, soul, and hip-hop.

Laila Johnson, summer intern from the Urban League of Philadelphia’s Internship Program, is the brains behind the program and executed it all by herself.

The event is sure to be a complete experience for everyone in attendance. It will feature live performances, interactive activities, snacks, and a deep dive into Black Philly Music history.

Those in attendance will also have access to the African American Museum in Philadelphia’s latest feature exhibition, Imprint: Dox Thrash Black Life, and American Culture.

While people of all ages are encouraged to attend, the event is mostly catered towards middle and high school students. It will answer the question: Which Philadelphian is credited as America’s First Black pop star?

The event will take place August 1, and span from 4 PM to 6 PM at the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
