Former Philadelphia Flyer Chris Therien Helps Others Through the Pennsylvania Recovery Center
Former Philadelphia Flyer Chris Therien has charted a new path for himself as part-owner and chief wellness officer at the new Pennsylvania Recovery Center site in Center City, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Therien joined the NHL in 1994 as a “light drinker,” he said. But by the time he retired 12 years later, he was an alcoholic.
He eventually sought treatment at Caron Treatment Center, which helped him overcome his addiction. Several years later he relapsed, and again turned to Caron.
Today, he has been sober for over 13 years and works to help others in a similar situation.
Pennsylvania Recovery Center is a community-based provider of services for addiction and mental health treatment. Earlier this month, it hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new site on the 1000 block of Winter Street.
The new location offers partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, and individual counseling, among other services.
“When somebody gets to 30 days [in recovery] we celebrate because we want them to keep going,” Therien said.
A part-owner of the site, Therien plans to be part of the Pennsylvania Recovery Center’s growth plans.
“I’d like to keep opening more centers,” he said. “I’d like to eventually have a residential detox where we can help more people.”
