Norristown’s Elmwood Park Zoo Sculptures Come From Zenos Frudakis
You can see many of the sculptures made by Zenos Frudakis around Philadelphia and even around the world.
Now, he’s creating special sculptures for the Elmwood Park Zoo as part of multi-million dollar renovations soon to be unveiled, writes Matteo Iadoni for 6abc.
Frudakis has spent a lifetime, more than 50 years, crafting larger-than-life sculptures that have become world-wide icons.
The Zoo’s new Welcome Center and Veterinary Health Center is expected to open on June 27.
For the first time, guests will be able to see the work going on among the zoo’s veterinary team. The upgrades will also allow the vets to provide greater care to the animals that come through their doors.
The center of a new plaza will include a fountain featuring four sculptures made by Frudakis.
“This is what the zoo is all about,” Frudakis said.
The piece will start with sculptures of a buck and fawn, who will be joined later by a doe and jaguar as the works are completed.
“To not sculpt would be like my voice was taken away from me,” Frudakis said.
