For 34 years, the West Chester University Annual Pre-Collegiate Piano Competition, established and chaired by WCU Assistant Professor of Organ and Harpsichord Anita Greenlee, has offered young pianists a stage to showcase their talents.

While the competition is private, a winner’s recital and awards presentation is set for Sunday, Apr. 21, from 3-4:30 PM in the Ware Family Recital Hall in Swope Music Building and Performing Arts Center (817 South High Street, West Chester).

The winner’s recital will include performances by the three prize winners from each of the three age divisions between nine and 18. For the second year, Jacobs Music of Philadelphia is a co-sponsor of the WCU Pre-Collegiate Piano Competition.

Open nationally without geographic restrictions, the competition draws talent from across the country. On Apr. 13, the nationally and internationally recognized pianists and educators who are jury members will decide the prize winners.

Greenlee’s musical background includes her studies at the Juilliard School of Music and concerts performed across northern Europe and the eastern United States. She brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role, said Emily Bullock, Chair of the Wells School of Music Vocal and Keyboard Department.

“Professor Greenlee believes giving children a platform to perform opens up a universe of creativity and confidence for them,” Bullock said. “It teaches them about the joys of sharing their music with the world.”

A master class will precede the recital in Ware Family Recital Hall from 12:30-2:30 PM. The master class will be conducted by esteemed Wells School of Music Associate Professor of Piano Carl Cranmer. Both the master class and the winner’s recital are open to the public.
