A Neumann University transfer student from Turkey is reinventing herself.

Sumbul Kiroglu hopes to draw on previous engineering skills to create innovation in the health care sciences, reports Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.

Sumbul Kiroglu was a mineralogist, petrologist, and spectral geologist in Turkey, working in the gold mining sector for eight years. Now she’s at Neumann furthering her education with a goal of teaching people how to be healthier.

“I feel stuck. That’s why I came here,” she said.

Sumbi arrived from a community college through a full tuition transfer scholarship offered by Neumann University, said Kathleen Swank, a Neumann professor. 

“She landed in our School of Nursing and Health Sciences because she was interested in health education, moving forward to further her degree,” Swank said.

The program teaches Kiroglu disease prevention techniques that she can then teach to others.

“My main job is to promote to people how to stay healthy, especially women,” Kiroglu said.

She’s expected to graduate in 2026.

“My old job I engaged more with the rocks, not the people and I just know that I couldn’t go back to my old job,” Kiroglu said.
