At Hartland Salvage in Harleysville, A Mother and Daughter Team Rescue Historic Pieces from Ending Up in Landfills
At Hartland Salvage in Harleysville, a mother-and-daughter team rescues historic pieces like doors, lights, and much more, and makes sure they do not end up in landfills, reports Bob Kelly for FOX 29 Philadelphia.
“I was an antique dealer for a long time,” said Janet Hart, who owns Hartland Salvage with her daughter, Tracy Housley. “And then I got sick. And I couldn’t work. I couldn’t do my shows.”
Her daughter started helping her and taking her to her doctor’s appointments.
“Single mom, needed a job,” said Heart. “And I said ‘How about we sell this stuff here?’ So instead of us going there, they come to us.”
That is how the business that was started as a salvage company by Heart’s husband changed the focus to keeping things from going to the salvage yard.
In addition to people bringing their items to them, the owners put a bid in for homes and buildings that are set to be demolished and then they save whatever they can from them.
The store sells everything from organ pipes to various furniture pieces and chandeliers.
