The former location of Wawa’s flagship location in Center City had been vacant since it chose not to reopen in 2020 due to the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Chase Bank recently filed to open a branch at the very location on the southeast corner of Broad and Walnut streets, writes Jeff Blumenthal for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The branch is expected to open in the fall.

This represents a continuation of Chase Bank’s retail push in the Philadelphia region, which began in late 2018 with plans to add 50 locations and now a goal of reaching 100 branches by 2027.

Chase now has 58 branches open throughout the region, 15 of which are in Philadelphia, covering all corners of Philly.

The former Wawa location opened in 2015 ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. It served as the chain’s flagship location until opening an 11,500-square-foot store in Old City in December 2018.

The store was among the most popular Wawa locations in the city.

The property is owned by the University of the Arts.
