The recent decision of Kobe Bryant’s dad to auction his son’s NBA championship ring highlights the uneven relationship his parents had with him during his 20-year career with the Lakers, writes Steve Henson for y! Sports.
Joe “Jellybean” Bryant was gifted the 2000 NBA championship ring by Kobe.
Bidding on the ring is now up to $94,000, with bidding ending March 30.
Kobe Bryant’s parents tried to sell several of his possessions in 2013, including sweat suits he wore as a Lower Merion High School student.
That attempt elicited a court challenge from Kobe Bryant and a public tweet from him on May 4, 2013.
“When u give Give GIVE and they take Take TAKE at wat point do u draw a line in the sand?” Kobe tweeted, adding the hashtags “hurt beyond measure,” “gave me no warning,” and finally, “love?”
A settlement was reached allowing his parents to sell six of the items worth $500,000.
Kobe’s close relationship with his parents seemed to end after he started dating, and later married, Vanessa Laine.
When Kobe’s number was retired by Lower Merion High School in 2002, his parents sat in one section of the bleachers. Vanessa sat in another.
