At a game against Dayton last week, Saint Joseph University’s Mackenzie Smith joined the 1,000-point club, writes Mia Messina for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

At the beginning of the game, Smith needed just five points to hit her 1,000th career point, joining Tayla Bruger and Chloe Welch who also reached the milestone this year.

She hit that court running and scored a layup quickly and then with just 4 minutes, and 50 seconds left in the first quarter, she sank a three-pointer.

Head Coach Cindy Griffin calls Smith “an everyday player,” always showing up and being consistent in her approach to the game and her competitiveness.

She is averaging 12.5 points and leads the team in three-point percentage at 42.7 percent.

Smith is the 30th St. Joe’s player to join the 1,000th-point club.

“I’m extremely grateful to be one of the 30. It’s a huge accomplishment that I’ve never expected in my life,” Smith said.

“We didn’t really keep track of those things at home, so just from everyone else’s point of view, I feel like it’s a huge accomplishment to have achieved in my junior year.”
