Jefferson Health and Lehigh Valley Health Network have signed a non-binding letter of intent to explore a merger that would create a mega health system across two states, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The new regional health system would include 30 hospitals, a national research university, and a health insurance company.

It would also include 700 care sites in eastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey with over 62,000 employees.

Depending on regulatory approval the merger could be official in 2024.

“The healthcare landscape and our communities’ needs are changing, said Dr. Joseph G. Cacchione, Jefferson’s CEO.

“It is critical leading systems evolve and make investments in the future of care and wellness…Combining Jefferson’s and LVHN’s resources will allow us to meet the changing needs of our diverse communities faster, more efficiently, and more effectively.”

Dr. Cacchione would be the CEO of the new health system. Dr. Brian A. Nester, CEO of Lehigh Valley Health Network, would be executive vice president, chief operating officer, and president of the legacy Lehigh Valley Health Network.

Jefferson is the parent company of 17 hospitals, including the Einstein Healthcare Network and Abington-Jefferson Health.
