As the search for a new home for the SS United States marches on, the possibilities of its future are aplenty, writes Ximena Conde for The Philadelphia Inquirer. 

The vessel has called Pier 82 in South Philadelphia for about 27 years, but an ongoing rent dispute could lead to an eviction. 

While the SS United States Conservancy — the nonprofit caring for the vessel — has tried to intervene, challenges have remained.

In March 2020, New York-based RXR Realty LLC announced plans to renovate the vessel.

The proposed redevelopment plans for the SS United States are plentiful, but the end result will depend largely on partnerships.

Among the highlights include turning it into a 1,000-room hotel or an event space, creating pier-side green space, or a museum that would highlight the technological and design features that make the SS United States such a marvel.

Regardless of what happens, the hope is that its future is impactful.

“The SS United States can be a powerful economic engine and cultural showplace that will create thousands of jobs, become a globally recognized destination, and generate millions in tax revenue,” said Susan Gibbs, president of the conservancy.
