Ross Abel, a resident of Abington Township, founded Jenkintown Vegan to be a resource for vegan-friendly eateries in the Greater Glenside area.

Today more restaurants than ever offer vegan-friendly options, but sometimes it can still be challenging to find the right dining spots when you are vegan, writes Ryan Genova for the Glenside Local.

That’s why Ross Abel, a resident of Abington Township, founded Jenkintown Vegan to be a resource for vegan-friendly eateries in the Greater Glenside area.

“I had heard of other people in the area looking for vegan options and I wanted to make sure those people know what’s out there,” Abel said.

Before moving to Abington in 2021, Abel had started a social vegan community in his native Austin, Texas. He had also organized a vegan festival.

On the website he designed himself, he categorizes local restaurants into three categories: “Totally veg/vegan options” which included PLNT Burger of Jenkintown, “Serve meat but have vegan options” including Drake Tavern and New Wild Ginger, and “Sweets & treats,” a category that includes Bilal’s Baker and Sprinkles Ice Cream Shoppe.

Abel hopes to continue to enhance the site, adding more resources.

“I’ve been trying places since we’ve moved. I know people are out there and wanting to support these businesses, particularly to local restaurants,” he added.
