Bryn Mawr College graduate Michelle Zauner dressed as the sorcerer Saruman from The Lord of the Rings for the final date of the Japanese Breakfast’s tour at The Fillmore Philadelphia on Tuesday night, writes Dan DeLuca for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In addition to Zauner, all band members were dressed as characters from the popular fantasy books and films.

Her husband, guitar and keyboard player Peter Bradley dressed as Gandolf while sax player Adam Schatz was a tree person.

Zauner, whose book Crying in H Mart remained on The New York Times best-seller list for more than 40 weeks, walked onto the stage in a white robe, with long hair and beard, and with a walking staff which she used to bang a gong decorated with a circle of skulls.

The lead vocalist said that it was never a question where the band was going to close the more than two-year-long tour for the band’s 2021 album Jubilee.

“It had to be here,” said Zauner. “We’ll always be a Philly band. We came up in this city. We will die in this city!”

In addition, Philadelphia “had so much to do with the musician I’ve become,” she added.
