Transportation professionals in Philadelphia and Lower Merion have been studying the feasibility of creating a new trail connection across the Schuylkill River.

The new trail would connect the Schuylkill River Trail in Manayunk with the Pencoyd Trail in Lower Merion Township.

The feasibility study explored whether an existing bridge dubbed by many as the “Mule Bridge” because it used to carry mule carts and later trains could be improved so bicyclists and pedestrians could safely use it.

The Mule Bridge was originally built in 1889 and is one of Philadelphia’s oldest metal railroad bridges. The last time a train crossed it was in 2017.

The Philadelphia City Planning Commission, in conjunction with the Streets Department, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, and Lower Merion Township, will host a virtual public meeting on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to present the findings of the study.
