For Silverman, public art helps build community engagement and heal some of the hurt in the world.

Growing up in Elkins Park, Kali Silverman, senior project manager for Mural Arts Philadelphia, has always found public art to be a beautiful way to celebrate the Philadelphia area, writes Jarrad Saffren for the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent.

“There’s so much in this city and so many stories that need to be told. Public art is accessible to everyone,” she said.

Silverman also explained that there is a political agency to public art as well.  It reminds us that the city around us is “there for us to use and make better.”

For her, public art helps build community engagement and heal some of the hurt in the world.

At Mural Arts Philadelphia, she helps artists put up murals in the city. Some of them have included murals showing Philadelphia during the George Floyd protests, honoring the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and welcoming residents to FDR Park in South Philadelphia.

“Our goal is to amplify their voices, amplify their vision and their artwork,” she said.
