The Go for the Greens garden project continues to thrive this season on the roof of the Nicholas and Athena Karabots Medical Building in Norristown, according to a staff report from the Main Line Times & Suburban.

The garden provides fresh produce along with garden education to families with young children in Norristown.

The project was founded by the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. It is being implemented in partnership with the family medicine residency program at Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital, the community programs department, and urban farm and education nonprofit Greener Partners.

Pediatric patients at Montgomery Family Practice took part in sessions focused on healthy living, gardening activities, and nutrition and physical education.

The program is geared toward 6- to 12-year-olds. Young gardeners took care of the garden, cooked healthy meals, and sampled produce, among other activities.

“We’re so glad we were able to bring this program to the community so children can learn from an early age about the important role of fresh produce to help prevent disease and keep us healthy,” said Dr. Arati Karnik, program coordinator of the family medicine residency program.
