An Abington High School alum has made her mark with multiple leadership positions for the city of Philadelphia, including a recent mayoral run in 2022, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Now Rebecca Rhynhart has a new position that will take her influence to the next level.

She will be Drexel University’s chief financial officer starting October 2, using her breadth of political and financial experience to guide the way.

Her career’s origin story begins on Wall Street, where she was a managing partner for the former investment banking company Bear Stearns. She soon joined Mayor Michael Nutter’s office in 2008, serving several roles, including budget director.

In 2018, she was elected to be the city controller, but quit to run for mayor. During the run, she received 23 percent of votes in the primaries.

The endorsement of her candidacy by three former mayors is a testament to Rhynhart’s popularity in the political realm.

Her role at Drexel will include overseeing budgets, financial planning, mergers, and procurement services. In addition, she will also be senior vice president for finance and the deputy treasurer.

This comes at a time when the Philadelphia school faces market-related challenges.
