Philadelphia narrowly avoided ranking among the top fifteen worst-run cities in America, according to a recently released ranking by Stacker.

Stacker compiled the list of 50 worst-run cities in the country using  June 2023 data from WalletHub’s Best- and Worst-Run Cities in America.

The factors used to evaluate the quality of city services include financial stability, education, health, safety, economy, and infrastructure, and pollution. Scores for these six categories were determined based on 36 relevant metrics, including average life expectancy, violent crime rate, and quality of roads.

Philadelphia ranked at No. 16, coming ahead of Denver, Colorado at No. 15, and Memphis, Tennessee at No. 14.

The City of Brotherly Love has managed to avoid ranking higher on this unflattering list in part due to Mayor Jim Kenney’s initiatives. He has been working closely with Philadelphia City Council with the aim of improving education and economic opportunities for city residents.

These include expanding the opportunity for quality pre-K education, creating community schools, and tackling health issues by implementing a tax on sweetened beverages.

The city topping the list is San Francisco, California, followed by Chattanooga, Tennessee and New York City.
