Morey Hershgordon, an Upper Dublin High School graduate, is heading to Boston to be Channel 7’s new lead sports anchor, writes Chadd Finn for The Boston Globe.

He has spent the last four and half years at WPRI in Providence, Rhode Island, but he is originally from the Philadelphia area.

When comparing Boston sports to his hometown sports, he said, “Much like Boston, there’s a great sports passion. Only Philadelphia has lost a lot more through the years.”

Hershgordon discovered his passion for sports broadcasting at the early age of 5 or 6 when he began announcing games for his blind grandfather.

Gil Kayson, a graduate of Penn State, was a passionate Philadelphia sports fan, but he lost his sight at the age of 40 because of degenerative eye disease.

“When I was a little kid, I’d go over to his house nearby on a Saturday and mute the television and would give him the play-by-play of the Phillies game at 7 o’clock,” Hershgordon said.

“My grandmother would make us dinner and I’d stay over and then do the same for the Eagles game at 1 o’clock the next day, giving him play-by-play and sideline reports and making up injury updates. And then I’d go back home.”

He would continue to call games for his grandfather, sometimes in person, other times over the phone, throughout college and into his professional career.
