One case of measles has been confirmed in Montgomery County. Here is what we know so far.

The Montgomery County Office of Public Health is investigating a confirmed case of measles in an unvaccinated Montgomery County child, writes MyChesco staff.

Measles is extremely contagious and can be spread through coughing and sneezing. The virus can linger in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after the infected person leaves the area.

Health officials are completing contact tracing to identify who might be at risk of exposure to the virus.

If you have been immunized against measles, your risk of contracting the virus is low. However, anyone who isn’t vaccinated or hasn’t had a prior measles infection, could potentially get sick.

If you think you may have been exposed and are pregnant, have a child under the age of one, aren’t vaccinated or have a weakened immune system, you should contact your healthcare provider.

The most common symptoms of measles are fever and an unexplained rash. The viral infection is preventable with two doses of MMR vaccine.
