First-ever Walking Tour of Pottstown’s Edgewood Historic Cemetery Coming in October
A first-ever walking tour of Edgewood Historic Cemetery, 989 E. High St. in Pottstown, is being planned for Saturday, Oct. 7. Volunteers hope to conduct three walking tours, with the first stepping off at 1 p.m.
During this “Walk to Remember,” tour guides and period costumed storytellers will describe the interesting people buried in this prominent Pottstown resting place, from local founding fathers – and mothers – to Civil War generals and other distinguished servicemen.
Volunteer Kelly Fenstermacher has conducted extensive research into many of the more than 4,500 interments dating back to the early 1860s and located on the Cemetery’s 12 acres.
“The stories of the fascinating people who shaped our history are at risk of being forgotten and lost forever, but, with our town’s support, we can preserve and share them through walking tours of the 162-year-old Cemetery,” Fenstermacher said.
To secure your tickets go to: https://givebutter.com/WalkingTour-1PM, or https://givebutter.com/WalkingTour-1-45PM; or https://givebutter.com/WalkingTour-2-30PM.
Tour ticket prices will be $20 per adult and $10 for students and children. The price will include free light refreshments.
This event will be a fundraiser to help support the cemetery’s maintenance fund and its approximately $20,000 in annual mowing fees, as well as its Adopt-a-Gravestone program to restore fallen headstones. It is notable that all care is provided through donations, as no funds are contributed via the Borough.
Thanks to essential volunteer efforts, Pottstown residents are increasingly able to enjoy the grounds as a peaceful place to walk and run or enjoy the new pollinator garden installed by Hearts for Humanity.
Planners welcome interest from a food truck vendor who would like to set up during this true community event.
