Fort Washington Man with Cerebral Palsy Loves to Compete in Triathlons with Help from a Friend

Gabe Anderson, a 22-year-old Fort Washington resident with cerebral palsy, just completed the Upper Dublin Triathlon for the sixth time. And he did it with the help of his friend, Cameron Smith, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC.

“If you look at triathletes, you might think that they have to look a certain way,” said Smith, who is 60 years old. “It’s not true.”

Smith and Anderson met years ago at an event for Ainsley’s Angels of America. The event promotes inclusion by finding ways for people with disabilities to take part in activities such as walks and runs.

“I love the idea of being able to help somebody else to do something that they might not be able to do,” said Smith.

So, the duo participated in the Upper Dublin Triathlon in 2017. They have not missed the annual event, located at Smith’s alma mater, Upper Dublin High School, ever since.

To complete the first leg of the race, Anderson sits on a raft as Smith swims back and forth. Then, Anderson switches to an Ainsley’s Angels race chair for the remainder of the triathlon.

“I just enjoy doing things, helping people,” said Smith.
