Devon’s Pour Richard’s Introduces World’s New Favorite Drink to Main Line
Pour Richard’s, the small batch specialty shop in Devon known for its great coffee and excellent spirits, has brought the cascara craze to the Main Line, writes Michele Gargiulo for Main Line Tonight.
This new-ish drink is as unique as it is delicious. It is created from the husks that remain after green beans are extracted from red berries inside which they grow. The husks are called cascara. They are usually discarded or used as compost, but some purveyors who are oriented toward sustainability — like Pour Richard’s — are turning them into delicious drinks.
Cascara at the local shop comes in four flavors, including lemon, blueberry, strawberry, and original. It is more tea than coffee, and its blueberry and strawberry flavors are very aromatic. The lemon flavor faintly tastes like tea with lemon and honey, while the original has traces of fruity Earl Grey tea.
For owners Richard and M.J. Berman, making cascara was a trial-and-error process. But after plenty of experimenting, they knew they had something special to offer their customers.
