Bala Cynwyd-based Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation held its 17th Annual Alex Scott: A Stand for Hope Telethon this week to raise funds for research on childhood cancer, writes the staff at CBS Philadelphia.

The origin story of the Montgomery County non-profit begins with a young girl by the name of Alexandra “Alex” Scott.

Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of brain cancer, before her first birthday. When she was four years old, she told her parents that she wanted to open a lemonade stand to raise money for other kids who also were fighting cancer.

Alex sold lemonade in her front yard every year until she passed away. Her memory is honored to this day through annual telethons that raise money to help find a cure. The telethon aired on CBS Philadelphia from 6 AM to 8 PM.

Since its inception, the foundation has funded over 1,000 research projects across the U.S. and Canada.

The Telethon has raised $47 million since 2007.
