A family business, far from a flaky idea, has a Montgomery County mother and son launching a Hatfield venture. Yia Yia’s Baklava celebrates the tradition of Greek culture and honors Christine and Dimitri Samaras’ ancestry. Yia Yia is a Greek term of endearment for grandmother, someone who Christine credits for the scrumptious baklava.

The dessert’s signature recipe was passed down from her grandmother, and Christine first learned how to bake the sweets from her mother at five years old. Michele Haddon reported these details in her Bucks County Courier Times story on the bakery.

Dmitri Samaras’s wife Leticia also runs the business.

“I’ve always wanted to share our baklava with the world,” Dimitri said. “It’s awesome to be in business with my mom, my best friend. And letting people try our baklava has been a cool experience — hopefully, one we can share with my son one day as well.”

The new shop is set to open at the end of the month.

Yia Yia’s offers original, lemon, and chocolate hazelnut flavors in packs of two or six — or in party trays.

The brand also has a regular presence at regional farmer’s markets, including one in Horsham. It can also be found in select grocery stores, natural food markets, and co-ops.
