Men Don Fancy Footwear in Collegeville to Benefit Shelter for At-Risk Women
A one-mile walk in Collegeville had area men in some nontraditional — but thematically significant — footwear. The event was a march against gender violence toward women. But its unofficial title described the challenge more clearly, to “walk a mile in her shoes,” reported Hadas Kiznitz for KYW Newsradio.
Participants donned heels, boots, pumps, and other female-appropriate foot coverings to navigate a one-mile neighborhood loop.
The goal — according to Brad Smith of Laurel House, a Montgomery County domestic violence shelter — was to raise awareness and funds to aid at-risk women.
“It’s kind of a goofy spin on something, but it’s really bringing that awareness to everyone,” said Smith. “You never can be in someone’s shoes until you really walk in their shoes.”
Despite best intentions, some participants struggled mightily. Kevin Lowrie of Schwenksville, for example, finished in his socks when his heels became unbearable.
But he found a lesson in his submission.
“Know when to call it quits,” he said. “Same thing with domestic violence: know when to ask for help.”
The Laurel House hotline is staffed 24 hours for endangered women; the number is 800-642-3150.
