The Victorian-Era home of Ashley Devlin and Justin Crean is a whimsical study in contrasts. The Willow Grove dwelling has period details like red-flocked wallpaper. But it also has some wonderfully wonky accents, as reported by Terri Akman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The couple arrived in Montgomery County from Philadelphia because of Crean’s need for a garage for a vehicle collection. The 1910 home they bought didn’t have one (they’re building one), but they couldn’t resist it anyway.

They addressed the interior with stylistic elements that included dark paint and textured wallpaper.

Devlin and Crean then filled its rooms with a host of eclectic items found at estate sales, flea markets, Facebook Marketplace, and eBay.

Devlin’s appreciation for taxidermy — gained from horror-movie fandom — inspired her to include animal heads in the look (taxidermy was a Victorian hallmark).

“I love animals and feel like this is a way to honor them,” she said.

To keep things from getting too dark, Crean perked up a deer head by giving it a mohawk and antler-piercings.

More on this unusual Victorian home is in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Ashley Devlin’s fandom for Victorian architecture came from vintage horror movies, but how did this style and scary movies get linked?
