Five Tips for Gen Z on Salary Negotiation
When you’re entering the job market, negotiating your salary can be intimidating, especially for Gen Z-ers. Here are tips from Shapiro Negotiations Institute’s Andres Lares on salary negotiation:
Prepare Your Script
It’s always wise to prepare what you’re going to say ahead of time. Lares suggests to prepare for how to approach the topic rather than how much you’re going to ask for.
Negotiate More Than Your Salary
Lares said that it’s also important to consider health insurance, your 401K or retirement accounts, PTO, and other benefits.
Research Salary Ranges
To get a good idea of what you’re owed, do your research. Make sure that your employers don’t give you the short end of the stick.
Know Your Worth
Letting your potential employers know of your accomplishments shows that you’re confident and won’t accept the low-end of a salary.
Don’t Let a Flashy Job Fool You
Just because the job title seems glamorous, or the salary is abundant, doesn’t mean it’s the right job for you. Ask yourself what you want out of a job and make sure you do your background research on the company.
