A Wynnewood entrepreneur and mom of three is planning to expand her business while reducing her carbon footprint. Gwenn Nolan founded Mother Compost in 2018, after a career in investing. The Narberth-based business collects food waste around the region for a small monthly fee of $20 to $28.

The waste then goes to Linvilla Orchards in Media.

Owner Chris Pierretti also offers pickup services to turn scraps into products to enrich soil, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today. While the composting business has only nine employees, the process it tackles is a community effort.

Mother Compost crews pick up waste from about 1,200 local customers each week. Its principals also work with other clients, such as schools.

Without composting efforts, waste is brought to incineration sites, where it turns into harmful methane gas or ends up in landfill. That reality became a clarion call for Nolan.

“I was always environmentally conscious, but I have no environmental science background,” she said. “This is something that called me later in life, after I became a mother. I asked what the future will look like for my children.”
