The bustling City Avenue off I-76 is seeing an uptick in new developments and is on the way to establishing its identity as a walkable district. There are 1,700 planned residential units along the avenue, along with retail and public space, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The revamping of City Avenue involves the following planned developments:

- Keystone Development & Investment’s two-building mixed-use space of 270 apartments and 36,000 square feet of retail
- Hanover Co.’s five-story, 400-unit apartment building with commercial space
- Tishman Speyer’s two million square foot redevelopment at the Bala Plaza site includes:
- 757 multifamily residential units
- A 168-key hotel
- 700,000 square feet of office space
- 200,000 square feet of retail space
- New trails
- 12 acres of green space
- A public amphitheater
- A four-story, 83-unit apartment building with commercial space by Cross Properties.
Along with these planned developments, the district is considering expanding the Indego bike share program to Lower Merion.
